Getting ready to take on a decking project? Somerlap have put together a handy decking checklist.

Do you have a plan?

Have you designed your deck and worked out how much material you’ll need? If not, refer back to Somerlap's planning blog.

Do you have the access you need to your garden?

Will you be able to get all the materials required into your garden? If not, do you need to arrange access via a neighbour’s property in advance?

Have you prepared your site?

  • Clear all turf, rocks and plants from the area to be decked. Make sure you have enough drainage.
  • You need to create a solid foundation for your decked area. This can be achieved with postcrete or by laying paving slabs if the area is flat.
  • If the decking is replacing a turfed area then lay weed control membrane beneath your decked area to protect against weeds.

Do you have everything you need?

Here's a list of everything you are likely to need.

Tools

  • Hammer
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • A saw or jigsaw suitable for cutting wood
  • Screwdriver

Do you have planning permission?

In England, decking doesn’t normally require planning permission unless it covers more than 50% of the garden space or is more than 30 cm off the ground. However, you should always check with your local planning department before getting started.
