Somerlap workshop shedSheds can make perfect workshops for everything from woodwork to DIY. Before you buy a shed for use as a workshop, here's what to consider...

Does it have enough room?

Don't scrimp on space when choosing a workshop shed, make sure you have enough room for:

  • Any equipment that needs to be housed in your shed (be sure to check it will fit through the doors). If you plan to store heavy equipment (or if you need a shed upwards of 10ft x 8ft), then a contractors frame would be the best choice. A contractors frame is strong enough to withstand the weight of a sit on lawnmower or similar. A contractors frame is very robust: 70mm x 33mm (wall framing) and 95mm x 45mm (floor and roof framing). Because our sheds can be custom made, you can always add double doors for easier access.
  • A workbench if you will be installing one.
  • Standing room. The shape of the roof (Apex or Pent) will also impact where you can stand. Pent sheds have generous headroom at the front, while Apex sheds make it easier to stand in the middle of the shed. If you prefer to stand up freely then a contractors frame would give you extra height.

If you need a lot of space, you might like to consider a custom shed, as they can be built up to 3m x 6m.

Will you be using it in winter?

In which case you may need some extra insulation in the shed, as well as electricity to provide heat and light.

If you won't be installing any artificial lights, make sure your shed has enough windows to provide enough natural light for whatever you will be working on. Need extra windows? No problem: for a modest expense we can add fixed, opening or (for added peace of mind) security windows to your shed. Adding a window on at least two different walls, effectively doubles the amount of light getting into the shed.

HANDY TIP: Painting the inside of a shed white does a huge amount to brighten up the interior.

Where will it go?

It's always important to consider placement when choosing a shed, but for workshop sheds it's particularly important as you may spend a lot of time in it.

Choose somewhere that is:

  • Easy to get to – do you need to lay a path?
  • Not in direct sunlight – sheds can get very hot inside in the summer months.
  • Facing south, if you would like to make the most of natural light.

What will you need to store in the shed?
