Overview
Cuprinol Garden Furniture Stain is a simple, effective solution for colouring and protecting all types of garden furniture. Whether you're finishing brand new pieces or breathing new life into weathered outdoor furniture, it delivers a great-looking result with minimal effort.
Preparation
Good preparation is key to a long-lasting finish. Before you begin:
- Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free from dirt, grease, oil or debris
- Sand back or strip any existing stains to expose bare wood
- Remove algae, moss, lichen or fungi with a stiff brush or scraper
- Treat any biological growth with an appropriate mould and mildew remover
- Fill cracks or splits using a suitable wood filler
- If the wood has greyed or weathered, use a furniture restorer to bring back its natural tone
- Wipe oily or resinous timbers with white spirit and leave to dry completely before applying stain
- Dense hardwoods such as Teak and Iroko generally don't need pre-treating, but softwoods like Pine and Spruce may benefit from a wax-free wood preserver beforehand
Application
Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first to check colour and compatibility. Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in wet conditions, or if rain is forecast before the product has had time to dry.
- Stir well before use and periodically throughout application
- Apply 2–3 coats with a good quality brush, working in the direction of the wood grain and avoiding lap marks
- Allow 2–6 hours drying time between coats — longer if the surface still feels tacky
Aftercare
Cleaning — The stain can be cleaned as needed using a dedicated garden furniture cleaner.
Maintenance — When the finish starts to show signs of wear, simply apply a fresh topcoat following the preparation and application steps above.
FAQs
Can I use Garden Furniture Stain on mahogany window frames? Although it's formulated with furniture in mind, there's no reason it can't be used on other exterior timber surfaces such as window frames.
What's the difference between Garden Furniture Stain in Teak and Teak Oil? The Garden Furniture Stain in Teak is a water-based product that adds colour to the timber, giving it a warm teak appearance. Teak Oil, on the other hand, is a solvent-based clear oil with a thinner consistency, designed to penetrate teak's naturally dense grain.
